A Little About Me and English

A BRIEF INTRODUCTION OF MYSELF AND ENGLISH

My name is Clarence King'ethu.Since my early years as a small and naive child till now as an ordinary everyday teenager, I have been and still am an English student. since the introduction of the subject to my life when I barely knew how to read and write, I have thoroughly and diligently studied English. My interest in the subject and all that it offers has immensely grown over the years. The subject has practically opened my mind and introduced me to very many possibilities. Everything, from the history of the English language to even the writers of great and moving books, each of those fascinates me as a person.

My interest in words and stories, all in English, is great. I am a firm believer that one needs to be exposed to as much English work in order to grow in the language.
As expected, I love to read books written by great English authors and writers. Some of them include:

  Very many things fascinate me about the English language, more so the stories and books. My favourite books of all must be Oliver Twist. The book describes the life of an orphan boy, Oliver Twist, who is born in a workhouse and sold to apprenticeship with an undertaker. However he escapes from the undertaker and goes to London, where is pulled into a group of young criminals and pickpockets. 
What I mostly like about English books is that they tell a story, be it true or just fiction, in a way one has never imagined it. In his book Oliver Twist, Charles Dickens tries to point out the harsh and cruel way that orphans were being treated during his time. This is a clear example that the English language can be used to express very many things, from emotions to everyday life, partly a reason why I really love the language and all that it can offer.

Speaking of English and all that it can offer, I am also fascinated by English poetry. From the very first poem Beowulf to modern day poems,how one can use this language to create a work of art can really fascinate one. One poem in specific really caught my attention: And the Moon and the Stars and the World by Charles Bukowski. A rather short and point forward poem, it is just a simple example ( one that I could come up with quite fast )  of how English can be used; it can be used as a source of entertainment.

Not only do poems and books in English fascinate me but also the songs. Be it songs written and sung a century ago or today's contemporary music. My favourite music band is called Imagine Dragons. I like it mostly because of the lyrics of their songs and also the rhythms in them.

I really do think that English is an awesome and fun language. It is broad and captivating and I know I can't wait to explore it even further.

Dulce et Decorum Est by Wilfred Owen In the poem Dulce et Decorum Est by Wilfred Owen, the idea of dying for one’s country is criticized.  The speaker is in a war wasteland. He is watching everything that is going on, being a soldier himself.  He is then forced to watch one of his friends die right in front of him.  The speaker questions the phrase “Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori”  which in Latin means “It is sweet and fitting to die for one’s country” by the gloomy and horrific pictures he brings  to mind in this poem.  The speaker makes a lot of references to the chaos and destruction caused by war, the amount of death that one is exposed to.  An angry and sad tone is used to convey the message in this dark poem.  The author's approach puts you in a war scene and helps you understand what soldiers  have to go through in order to make sure that we are happy back in our homeland. PERSEPOLIS

PERSEPOLIS: FROM MY POINT OF VIEW The book, Persepolis,is an extremely interesting book, clearly depicting Iran during 1970's to the 1980's. The book basically talks about the wars in Iran, The troubles that many go through, and the resilience of one family to persevere through all of what was going around, even during the worst of times.The book starts off by explaining, briefly, the start of the Islamic Revolution in 1979, and the effects that included separation of boys and girls in school and girls being forced to wear the rather illusive veil ( not cool if you ask me )! In the middle of all this, is a little girl, barely ten years old, of whom the book is all about. Her name is Marjane Satrapi. In my opinion, she is a rather undecided and rebellious girl even as she grows up throughout the book. A Midsummer Night's Dream - Act 2 Scene 2

A Midsummer Night's Dream, a play written by William Shakespear at around 1595 or 1596, is an interesting work of art. It talks about quite a number of characters in rather different situations throughout the play. Be it the group of actors preparing for what seems to be the biggest play of their lives, or the two couples and their endless troubles. The play has many twists and turns, a lot of dark humor, drama; it is basically a fun adventure, for any age and time. ACT 2 SCENE 2 Act 2 scene 2 is a rather interesting part of the whole play, as it shows the relationships between Hermia and Lysander and Helena and Demetrius. It also shows the relationship between Titania and Oberon. Our task was to identify five unique things or scenes going on in that section of the play. We were then supposed to recreate those scenes by taking pictures that would represent those scenes. The task was simple but at the same time quite a handful.
